Iโve started volunteering with a charity called ‘Young Enterprise London’. We go into schools and teach children and youth about business and entrepreneurial skills.
This week we went into a secondary school and worked with year 7 and 8 (age 11 to 12).
As part of the activities the children were asked to create something called a โsuccess hatโ.
Working in groups of 6, they had to write on a big sheet of paper what success means to them. As many words as they could. Then they were asked to pick just one word and create a balloon hat to symbolize that word. Next they got to parade their hat in front of everyone and explain how their hat described the word theyโve chosen.
Needless to say, they’ve picked up words like achievement, college and good grades. And although money was on their success sheet, money wasnโt picked up as a โsuccess hat’ word.
Surprisingly (or maybe not ๐) words that were repeatedly picked up by several groups were โLoveโ and โHappinessโ. Just yesterday 3 groups chose the word โLoveโ and 2 โhappinessโ. This is about 30 out of 90 children aged 12, who see Love and Happiness as the meaning of success.
What does success mean to you? What does being successful mean to you?
For me success means acting always from a place of love and being happy. Success also means reaching as many people as I can, assisting on their way to self love and inner peace.
I was touched by those teens that although they are aware that money is important, and so is achieving good grades and having lots of friends, at the end of the day all they want is to be happy and feel loved.
Yesterday when the school day was finished and most of the balloons were picked up, there was one orange balloon left with the word LOVE written on it, and one last boy left in the room rushing to pick it up.
I would love to hear your thoughts and comments about success.
Love your self, change the world.
