The first time I visited the US was on business. I’d just moved to France, working for an American networking company and I attended a three-week course at the headquarters in Santa Clara, CA.
I was amazed to see the different students in the course, like they were characters in American movies and TV shows.
The US, ‘America’ was the “shining city on the hill” where people / immigrants came from all over the world and made it work. Little did I know, things are not black and white (maybe pun not intended but well suited).
I loved sitting in a class with people from different backgrounds and origins, and the food was to die for … (another pun, maybe)
That was way before theΒ dot-com bubble burst. And long before I’ve called California my home for 4 years.
I’ve compared the courtesy and politeness to where I came from (in this lifetime) and saw a melting pot that can be done differently, better, or so I thought.
Maybe the great American experiment is done for. Maybe those are just kinks along the way. Maybe the entire planet is one big melting pot.
Maybe we ought to rethink the social structures we call countries.
For today, for all my American friends, colleagues and family, I wish you well. I hope this is really a bump in the road, and you will be able to really create the ideal of what America stands for, in the Superhero movies we watched as kids …Β
Happy 4th.
